April 14: Annual Yield Reception

•k April 2007 • Leave a Comment

The Yale Club of Singapore held its Annual Yield Reception on 14 April 2007 to welcome new students for the year.

ADMISSIONS

This year, Yale received a total of 19,323 freshman applications. 1,860 students were admitted. From schools in Singapore, a total of 179 students applied and 14 were admitted. We were happy that 9 of those students and their families were able to attend the reception. In total, we had about 70 Yalies, their families and guests attending. We were also happy to have Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions Peter Chemery join us at the reception.

SPECIAL MENTION

Special thanks go to Hogi and Claudia Hyun for being such gracious and generous hosts, in sharing their home with us as well as the champagne we had enjoyed that night. Thanks also to Club President Henry Eng and Vice President Devin Kimble for sponsoring the F&B (Henry and Devin were unable to attend – Henry was not feeling well and Devin was in Australia participating in a beer brewing competition); Sibyl Eng and her team of interviewers for working behind the scenes; Brewerkz staff (Yen Leng, Sharon, Matthew and Jacob) and Nora (Hogi and Claudia’s helper) for managing the F&B logistics; Elizabeth Tan for helping out at the reception; and Ping Tan for leading the round of “Bright College Years”. Last but not least, many thanks for those who were able to take time out of their busy schedule to join us at the reception.

February 24: Post Chinese New Year Get-together

•k April 2007 • Leave a Comment

The Club organised a little post-Chinese New Year get-together on 24 February 2007 by the Singapore River at Brewerkz. In total, we had about 30 Yalies, their family and friends attending. It was also a good opportunity for a visiting Yalie and an early admissions student to meet with alumni.

SPECIAL MENTION

We were happy to have amongst us Denise Joselson from New York. Denise, who graduated with a masters in social work from Yale in 1946 (back in the days when women were not allowed admission into undergraduate studies). Denise was in Singapore visiting her son over the Christmas break. Denise is an active member of the Yale community. She continues to interview students for admissions to Yale (although she tells me that despite her many years of interviews, non of her interviewees have ever been admitted) and serves on the board of the Yale Westchester Alumni Association. She indeed gave Club President Henry Eng a run for his money on being the oldest Yalie in Singapore. (NB: Henry graduated in 1950, but is older than Denise as he had enlisted in the army prior to joining Yale.) Also accompanying her were Denise’s husband, Morton (partner in the securities firm Montag & Joselson), and her son Tedd (a renowned international concert pianist).
