June 6: Yale Club AGM @ Brewerkz

The Yale Club held its Annual General Meeting at Brewerkz on Wednesday 6 June 07 from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. Thanks to Devin, who sponsored the food and drinks, our stomachs were happily filled and throats watered by the time the meeting proper started – a good meeting by any measure.

The feasting aside, we did some serious work. Aside from the usual administrative items (e.g. approval of past year AGM minutes and finances), the meeting approved changes to the Club Constitution to:

  • clarify some of the language of the old constitution;

  • decrease the number of Exco members to facilitate operations (the constitution now provides for 10 Exco members; we moved to cut it down to a core team consisting a President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer and Officer at Large;

  • allow annual membership fees to be set at the AGM to allow greater operational flexibility;

  • allow Exco-appointed accountants (not necessarily Yalies) to audit our accounts (prior to this, the auditors had to be Yalies as well); and

  • clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Exco members.

Another important focus of discussion was how we were reaching out more to sister Clubs in the region and beyond (e.g. HK Club visit to Singapore in December, Shawn’s visit to Vietnam in July to meet alumni there, potential Singapore Club trip to China and Vietnam in 2008), as well as other possible activities in the near future. The Exco members also discussed a strategic realignment for the Club to provide targeted value-added/exclusive events/activities/opportunities to our members.
