October 11: “Beyond the Singapore Sling” Workshop
•k October 2007 • Leave a CommentAnother under the Life and Lifestyle series organised by Aun Koh with the national Museum, the Club organised an outing to the Beyond the Singapore Sling: Creating Cocktails with Local Herbs and Spices workshop at the National Museum, The Salon Level 1, on Thursday 11 October, 6:30 – 8pm.
Like the chocolate workshop, this was a blast because we got to taste what we learnt. We were taught the basics of how to infuse liqours with Asian herbs and spices, and use them as ingredients in our own concoctions.
September 29: Young Bulldogs Bowling Event
•k September 2007 • Leave a CommentThe Young Bulldogs had a little get-together for its members at the American Club. Many thanks to the following for making the event possible: Ping & Liz for hosting the event; Terence for entertaining the kids with balloon twisting and juggling; Terence & Grace and Erina helping look after the kids; and Shawn and Erina for the logistics/support/general organisation.
—
About the Young Bulldogs. The Young Bulldogs caters to Yalies with young kids. Its activities are family-centric/family-friendly and serves as a platform for Yalies and their kids to interact with each other. Families take turns to “host” the events, e.g. come up with the concepts/ideas for the events. Administrators (Shawn and Erina) are at hand to help the host families conceptualise and operationalise these ideas. To give the parents some space to chill out, we will also invite a small number of younger Yalies to join in and help look after the kids. Events are planned to be held once a month. The bowling event of 29 September 2007 was our inaugural event, with some 20 adults & children attending. Currently, we have 14 families on board – totaling 25 adults and 25 children. On average, we expect 6-8 families to attend each event.
Privacy. As we’d like to preserve the privacy of our members, we will only put up limited details of Young Bulldog events on the Club website for record and information purposes after the event. The blurb you see above is what you would expect when we share what we do.
Interested Parties. Families not already on the mailing list interested in participating can contact the administrators Erina Lie at erina.lie@aya.yale.edu or Shawn Tan at yaleclubsingapore@gmail.com for more information. We are also on the look out for younger Yalies keen to help out in logistics, in areas such as event planning, child care and child entertainment.
September 26: Exco Meeting / Slingers Game
•k September 2007 • Leave a CommentThe Club had an Exco meeting on 26 September 2006 over pizza and beer at Brewerkz Indoor Stadium, followed by a Singapore Slingers basketball game at the Brewerkz box seats. Many thanks yet again to Devin & Brewerkz for keeping our stomachs satisfied and bringing us in for the game.
The meeting discussed the following:
- Progress of the Club’s house cleaning efforts. Most done save for Ops Manual (to be done by Chi Ho) and change of bank signatories.
- Discussion of future events. We talked about a Christmas event in December & about the Yale SOM trip to Singapore in January, which we will organise something for then.
- Update on Young Bulldogs initiative.
- Proposed Relatively Recent Graduates of the Yale Club of Singapore. Shawn shared with meeting that Erina had proposed this; and that both would be working to organise a more regular meeting to bring recent grads together.
- Funding for Young Bulldogs initiative and Relatively Recent Graduates of the Yale Club of Singapore. Shawn sought funding for the admin costs of running the YB and RRG groups. Estimated about $100 per event. Will provide more detailed proposal to next Exco for approval.

September 15: “Know Your Chocolate” Workshop
•k September 2007 • Leave a CommentStrongly recommended by fellow Yalie & ChubbyHubby Aun Koh, the Club organised an outing to a chocolate tasting/education worksop “Know Your Chocolate” on Saturday 15 September, 3 – 4.30pm, at the National Museum (The Salon, Level 1).
The great thing about food workshops is that you get to taste what you learn. The key speaker was a pastry head for Valrhona in SEA (if I recall correctly). He walked us through at least six different types of chocolates and were provided a basic framework to understand the flavours in chocolate. Other stuff covered included the production and manufacture of chocolate, and basics of what makes a good pralineWe all went home with a box of Valrhona chocolates each. Yummy.
—
Know Your Chocolate write-up
Can you tell the difference between a good chocolate and a great one? Does having a higher percentage f cocoa in a chocolate necessarily mean a superior taste experience?
This workshop traces the origins of our favourite deep, dark indulgence and teaches you how to tell the difference between different kinds of chocolates. As part of this sinfully rich course, participants will artake in a chocolate tasting session
Record Keeping
•k September 2007 • Leave a CommentThe Yale Club stores its records in two areas: (a) online on our website under Shawn Tan’s charge; and (b) physical records at MENU Pte Ltd under the charge of Devin Kimble.
Since start 2007, the Club started updating our records online as well (in addition to our physical files) on our website. The records Members will be able to find online include:
- Report of Past Yale Club events;
- Summary of Upcoming Yale Cub events;
- Notes and supporting documents for Exco meetings / Annual General meetings, including documents for Registry of Society Filings (Notes of meeting, election results, Annual Financial Statements etc);
- Information on Ideas and Initiatives launched under the Yale Club Singapore umbrella; and
- Others.
Putting our records online serves multiple purposes, some of which include:
- creating greater accountability of the Exco on performance vis-a-vis activities and operations;
- facilitating Member’s queries about Club activities and operations; and
- facilitating Exco’s sharing of soft copies of notes of meetings, constitution and account statements for Club purposes.
That said, the online records are a focused subset, from an information on activities and transparency standpoint, of the overall records held in physical form at Menu Pte Ltd. Much of the information we hold as physical records are also very much operational in nature, e.g. forms regarding change of signatories for bank account each time we change Treasurers etc., which we would not want to innundate our members with. The physical records also serve as a backup just in case wordpress tries to do something funny.

Interviews & Outreach: General Information
•k July 2007 • Leave a CommentInterviewsEvery year, the Yale Undergraduate Admissions Office shortlists some 100 + applicants from Singapore for interviews which it requests the Club help coordinate. Interviews are a fun way to stay in touch with the local students. Interviewees will be given guidelines on how to interview and write the report. The old hands will also be happy to share their experiences as well. Interviews are held at a mutually convenient locations and usually lasts an hour. The report usually takes 30 minutes to complete and is done online. Interviews are usually done in the first and last quarter of every year. If you’d like to help out or find out more, please contact our local Director of Alumni Schools Committee, Sibyl Eng, at sibyleng@gmail.com.
Acitivities
The Club organises an annual yield reception every year to welcome successful applicants and their families to the Yale family. This is one of our most well-atteneded event and is usually held in April. Successful applicants and their families are also welcome to join in our various activities before they head off to Yale for their studies.
July 19: Farewell Reception for Yale World Fellows
•k July 2007 • Leave a CommentIt brought the Club great pleasure to bring fellow Yalies together to bid farwell to Penny Low and Huzir Sulaiman before they head off to Yale under Yale’s World Fellowship programme. We were most honoured to have them with us. The farewell reception was attended by 30 Yalies and kindly sponsored by Club Vice President Devin Kimble at his latest Brewekz outlet at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Started five years ago, the World Fellowship programme selects 18 highly accomplished mid-career men and women from government, business, media, and civil society organisations worldwide for a four-month leadership programme. For those not in the know, Penny was Singapore’s youngest female Member of Parliament as well as founder of the Social Innovation Park, which promotes social entrepreneurship in Singapore. She is also the first Singaporean to be selected for the programme. Huzir is joint-artistic director of the Checkpoint Theatre and is well-known for satirical plays that have been staged in many global cities. Both Penny and Huzir have been selected out of a list of 970 applicants.
In addition, the Exco took the opportunity to share with our Members the Club’s state of affairs and vision. The Exco put forth a value proposition for members to support us through voluntary annual dues or a one-time life-time membership donation. See Value Proposition Letter.
Many thanks to those who attended the event. We managed to raise about S$2,187 for the club, which will go to underwrite some of our larger planned events (e.g. Yale Club of HK visit to Singapore for the Standard Chartered run), cover the administrative costs and help support some of the charitable causes we would like to explore in the future.
July 11: Exco Meeting
•k July 2007 • Leave a CommentThe Club Exco held its regular meeting at Brewerkz, Singapore Indoor Stadium, on 11 July 2007, from 8 – 10pm. The meeting was also attended by representative of the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni (AAAYA) and Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) Woo Pei Wei.
During the meeting, the Exco discussed the following:
- Encourage members to take part in future Exco meeting. For the next Exco meeting, Cub will target Wed 26 Sep 07. Devin will bring attendees to the Brewerkz corporate box for the Slingers Game that night. Corporate box limited to eight persons.
- Discussed with Pei Wei ways in which the Singapore Club could work with AAAYA and AYA.
- Discussed the possibility of organising a finance roundtable in April 2008.
June 22: Dinner Reception for Jim Rogers and Paige Paker
•k June 2007 • Leave a Comment
The Yale Club of Singapore organised a cosy dinner reception on 22 June 2007 to welcome Jim Rogers and Paige Parker to Singapore.
The reception was hosted by Hogi & Claudia Hyun at their residence from 7 – 10pm. We were well fed with delectables from Penang Place (well-known for their authentic and absolutely sinful Penang fare) – including classics like Penang Char Kway Teow, Lobak, Enche Kebin, Kerabu Mango and Bubur Chacha – and well watered with wine, champagne and whisky. A tasting of four single malts was conducted at the sidelines of dinner. The dinner reception was also an opportunity for the Club to touch base with a new member of the Yale family – Penny Low - who will be attending Yale as a World Fellow from August – December 2007.
SPECIAL MENTION
Many thanks go to our generous hosts, Hogi & Claudia Hyun, for opening up their home to the Club yet again, picking the tab for dinner and watering our throats with copious amounts of wine and champagne. Special thanks also go to Ping Tan & Liz Yong for playing chauffeur to Jim & Paige; Shelagh Mahbubani and Sarah Ong for handling the reception; Sandi for helping out with the photography; as well as the Hyun’s helpers for helping with the logistics. Thanks also go to Chris Cho, brand ambassador for single malts at Diageo, who supplied the whiskies and conducted the whisky-tasting sessions. Special mention goes to Loc, from the Vietnam Club, who made this event possible by putting the Club in touch with Jim. Last, but not least, many thanks for those who were able to take time out of their busy schedule to join us at the reception.

June 6: Yale Club AGM @ Brewerkz
•k June 2007 • Leave a CommentThe Yale Club held its Annual General Meeting at Brewerkz on Wednesday 6 June 07 from 7:30 – 9:00 pm. Thanks to Devin, who sponsored the food and drinks, our stomachs were happily filled and throats watered by the time the meeting proper started – a good meeting by any measure.
The feasting aside, we did some serious work. Aside from the usual administrative items (e.g. approval of past year AGM minutes and finances), the meeting approved changes to the Club Constitution to:
-
clarify some of the language of the old constitution;
-
decrease the number of Exco members to facilitate operations (the constitution now provides for 10 Exco members; we moved to cut it down to a core team consisting a President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer and Officer at Large;
-
allow annual membership fees to be set at the AGM to allow greater operational flexibility;
-
allow Exco-appointed accountants (not necessarily Yalies) to audit our accounts (prior to this, the auditors had to be Yalies as well); and
-
clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Exco members.
Another important focus of discussion was how we were reaching out more to sister Clubs in the region and beyond (e.g. HK Club visit to Singapore in December, Shawn’s visit to Vietnam in July to meet alumni there, potential Singapore Club trip to China and Vietnam in 2008), as well as other possible activities in the near future. The Exco members also discussed a strategic realignment for the Club to provide targeted value-added/exclusive events/activities/opportunities to our members.
See attached (a) Minutes of AGM (b) financial statements: Yale Club AGM – Assets and Liabilities; Yale Club AGM – Income and Expenditure (c) Constitution Amendments – Tracked; and (d) report on last year’s activities.
May 26: DUAL Trivia Challenge Event
•k April 2007 • Leave a CommentThe Club fielded a team to participate in the DUAL (Distinguished Universitites Alumni League) Trivia Challenge Event, on Saturday 26 May 2007 at the American Club (Colonial Room) from 7 – 11pm. One of the highlights of the event was a quiz session on Nutrition, which mainly involved participants tasting V Tee Room cookies and trying to guess what ingredients were involved in making them.
